Freemasonry is one of the oldest social and charitable organisations in the world.
It stems from medieval times and the traditions of the stonemasons who travelled around the country looking for building work on cathedrals, castles and bridges. They used special words, and signs to show their different skill levels, a tradition that is still very much part of Freemasonry today (as is the wearing of aprons and gloves).
However, today's Freemasons are focused on building relationships and supporting the local Community, rather than shaping stone into buildings, as their predecessors did.
There are now around 1,700 Oxfordshire Freemasons, meeting at 56 Lodges around the county.
Seven of these Lodges are all members of The Henley Masonic Centre.
